Faculty members and administrators at Michigan State University who are interested in sharing their research, news or expertise with the public are invited to participate in upcoming media training workshops offered by University Communications and Marketing. These workshops are designed to equip Spartans with the skills and confidence to effectively engage with the media and broader audiences.
Each session will provide a comprehensive overview of the value of public engagement, illustrating how it can enhance both individual and institutional reputations, influence policy decisions, and build trust with the public. Participants will also gain insights into today’s rapidly evolving media landscape, including what journalists look for in expert sources and how to become a reliable and effective voice in the news. The training introduces five essential steps for successful interviews — ranging from researching an outlet and refining key messages to navigating difficult questions and structuring responses with clarity and impact. In addition, the workshops highlight a range of communications strategies and public relations tools that participants can use to initiate and sustain meaningful engagement with the public through working with media.
Upcoming sessions (fall 2025 through spring 2026):
Friday, Oct. 3 (9-11:30 a.m.)
Thursday, Nov. 6 (9-11:30 a.m.)
Friday, March 6 (9-11:30 a.m.)
Thursday, April 2 (9-11:30 a.m.)
All workshops listed will present the same information, so please choose only one date.
All sessions will take place in-person at the STEM Teaching and Learning Facility, 642 Red Cedar Road, East Lansing, Michigan, 48824, in room 2110. A light breakfast will be provided starting at 8 a.m. and the training will begin promptly at 9 a.m.
While priority will be given to faculty and administrators, staff and students are also welcome to sign up if they are planning to interact with media in the future.
