Brand and Institutional — Outdoor Long Term

Purpose: University-level messaging 

  • Large building banners or visual displays
  • Lamppost banners 

Approval: Long-term building banners and lamp post banners require two approvals before installation: 

  • University Communications and Marketing (UCAM) for branding, design and messaging
  • Infrastructure Planning and Facilities’ Campus Events Office — for structural, safety and operational considerations

Installation is not permitted without both approvals.

Directional and Wayfinding — Outdoor

Purpose: Guide visitors and improve campus navigation experience 

  • Street name signs (IPF Landscape Services)
  • Parking and lot identification signs (MSU Police and Public Safety Parking Services)
  • Facility identification and directional signs (IPF Design and Construction) 

Approval: Managed through IPF Design and Construction, Landscape Services or DPPS Parking Services.

Identification — Outdoor

Purpose: Identify MSU facilities, land, buildings and units

  1. Monument signs at main entrances
  2. University-branded fixed sign
  3. Building and departmental name panels
  4. Temporary banners (i.e. residence hall identification during Move-In) 

Approval: IPF Design and Construction (signage types 1–4) and/or UCAM (signage types 1–2)

Informational and Regulatory — Outdoor

Purpose: Communicate policies, accessibility information and safety messages 

  • Parking regulation signs
  • Americans with Disabilities Act and accessibility signage
  • Safety/emergency information boards 

Approval: DPPS and IPF Landscape Services coordination. Contact Landscape Services at 517-353-1760 or ipf.LandscapeServices@msu.edu.

Temporary Signage — Outdoor

Purpose: Limited to yard signs used for university initiatives or directional wayfinding for events

  • Event banners
  • Yard signs 

Approval: Requests for use of temporary signage are reviewed for approval by IPF Campus Events. In some cases, additional review through the Office of the Board of Trustees is required. Please allow two weeks for a response. 

Approved directional signs should be installed shortly before an event begins and removed immediately afterward. For more information and to make an event request, visit IPF Campus Events.

Digital and Electronic — Indoor/Outdoor

Purpose: Enhance communication through technology-based displays

  • LED building displays
  • Digital kiosks and information screens 

Approval: IT Services (Indoor), IPF Campus Planner (Outdoor)

Donor Recognition and Commemorative

Purpose: Honor contributions and legacy

  • Plaques
  • Statues
  • Donor walls
  • Named spaces and facilities 

Approval: IPF with University Advancement. Contact IPF at 517-353-1760 or cipf@msu.edu.

Internal Wayfinding and Office Identification — Indoor

Purpose: Facilitate navigation inside buildings; identify rooms and offices
